LED

Light-Emitting Diodes. The very core of a headlamp.

Cree is considered the highest-quality producer of light-emitting diodes. All our headlamps feature LEDs from Cree to give you the most consistent light output possible.

Lumen (lm) is the standardized unit of luminous flux, the quantification of visible light emitted from a light source, or a measure of light output.

Moonlight headlamps range from 500 lumens to an astonishing 4000 lumens.

Light output from a headlamp is measured in lumens, and the measurement is often standardised by ANSI (American National Standards Institute). This standard states that lumens measurement is conducted between 30 and 120 seconds after the headlamp is switched on with fresh batteries - it therefore gives an indication of optimal light output under optimal circumstances. What happens after the 120 seconds is rarely considered in the measurement. The result?
As long as a headlamp can produce 1500 lumens for a maximum of two minutes, it can be marketed as a 1500 lumens headlamp - even if the light output is gradually reduced after these two minutes. In many cases, the light output is reduced to 50% or less after an hour's use.

We at Moonlight see this as misleading for all practical purposes. We guarantee that our headlamps provide the stated amount of lumens throughout the battery's runtime.

At Moonlight we have developed a special aluminium housing design that handles the heat and allows the LED to deliver real and constant lumens from 100% to 10% of the battery life. To give you predictability and consistent lighting throughout your adventure.

High luminance also means a high temperature in the circuit board. If the temperature of the chip increases, the service life is reduced, and this can also affect the effectiveness of the LED. If the circuit board is cooled, however, the service life is significantly prolonged.

For our Bright As Day collection ranging from 800 to 4000 lumens, our blade design is sufficient to reduce the temperature of the lamp to deliver maximal lumens at all times during use.

Inspired by the heating industry, our blade design increases the surface of exchange compared to similar lamps from competitors, and a bigger surface can be cooled more quickly. We also use tempered aluminum, which is a much more efficient material for heat exchange. And to build on this concept even further, the air flux is increased when moving at any pace to aid in cooling. We therefore designed our Constant Lighting technology with activity in mind (walking, skiing, and cycling).

While standing still, we recommend reducing the brightness down from the highest level to maximize the performance and life of the lamp.

Our lamps come with overheat protection, reducing brightness if temperatures reach potentially dangerous levels.

Measured in kelvins (K), the whiter the light, the better you will see. However, yellow light is more comfortable for the eyes if you are exposed directly to the light for a longer period of time.

Our Bright As Day collection feature 6000K white light color, mimicking daylight without causing excessive eye fatigue. The Noctia system delivers a slightly whiter light at 6500K for a little more brightness at a lower lumen output.
