SOS Mer De Glace, Chamonix.

Moonlight sheds light on what matters.

August, 2023. The warmest year on record. Temperatures are raising, permafrost is melting. If the glaciers could speak, what would they say?

Initiated by Moonlight and realized by Photographer Vegard Aasen and Activist Calum Macintyre.

Sadly, The Mer De Glace became an icon when it comes to the visual impact of climate change. Picture by Peignée Verticale.

Vegard: The SOS Project is a visual outcry from nature. As the climate crisis accelerates and our landscapes are eroded by human impact, this project represents nature's desperate plea for help. Using light to "draw" the universal distress signal (SOS) across iconic landscapes, these images are a stark reminder of the urgency we face. Each photograph captures the beauty of the world we are losing—and the call to save it before it's too late.

Moonlight: We followed the Lights Line Project with great interest and wanted to see more of those artistic projects mixing lights with environmentalist action. Since we were already in Chamonix for the UTMB event, we asked Vegard and Calum to do something meaningful with us. We gathered 15 people from the community, from activists to alpinists, guides to scientists and headed to Mer De Glace.
As a retail company, we are part of the problem. We know this. Is that a reason to hide in the shadow? We don't think so. We took on the mission to change mentalities in the outdoor industry. We think that together, we can undoubtedly make a positive impact and move forward. We are working every day to build even more durable products that will last you decades. We encourage everyone to take care of their equipment, and to buy only the gear you really need. We are committed to working toward a more sustainable business, and we need to do it collectively.

Calum: Our journey begins with the Mer de Glace glacier in the Alps, once an emblem of alpine grandeur but now rapidly diminishing. This image isn’t merely about recounting the well-known facts of the climate crisis—it's about amplifying the call for a Fossil Fuel Treaty - a bold and necessary initiative to phase out fossil fuels.

Why Advocate for the Fossil Fuel Treaty? The treaty is critical as it addresses what COP conferences have repeatedly failed to:

  • End new coal, oil, and gas projects.

  • Ensure a just transition to sustainable energy.

  • Hold governments accountable with binding agreements.

Fossil fuels, the primary driver of the climate crisis, account for 90% of CO2 emissions from human activities. Without a solid plan to phase them out, we are on a path to catastrophic tipping points. In 2024 we have had 12 consecutive months with average global temperatures 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial level - the limit that the Paris Agreement set.
